Google Hotpot helps you decide whats for dinner tonight

google hotpot Location based services are the new black, lets just face it. The explosion of companies like Foursquare, Scvngr and Gowalla onto the technology scene have made 2010 the year of checking in! 2011 is already shaping up to be another exciting year for location based technology with South by Southwest approaching as well as the launch of Googles new Hotpot.

Hotpot is a recommendation engine for local businesses based on you and your friends’ ratings, AKA googles solution for yelp. Working side by side with Google Places, this announcement was big news on Monday. “Hotpot is a pretty simple concept, but when connected with a business directory of more than 50 million places, it can be a powerful consumer tool. Users sign-in and are prompted to search for a general theme and establish their location. The default search is “restaurants”, and Google did a decent job of finding me without me having to put in my exact location. For accurate results, take the time to enter your town; otherwise, you may end up with results that are 50 miles away.” – Venturebeat

The tool appears to combine the best of two worlds: Yelp and its reviews and Foursquare’s sharing of someone’s location.

Overall a simple concept matched with a powerful engine only means more to look forward to!
